Oldest seed (seed Scavenger hunt)
I am updating this entry to include the seed scavenger hunt. I gave each child a number list of clues. They had to take the clue and find the seed in my yard. For example, we have a huge Magnolia tree that has a ton of seed pods all around it. I told the children to look for the tree that makes huge white flowers. Once they found the seed they had to bring it back to me before they moved on to another seed. The premise was that they learned how seeds are everywhere! I wanted them to see examples of plants putting out seed in various forms. It was a huge hit!
I am learning all kinds of very cool things teaching my gardening class. I am teaching them about seed and germination. EXCTING NEWS!!! The seeds that the kids sowed on Thursday have started to germinate. I am soooo happy, 22 new little gardners have been started. I want to keep the class from snoring so I have been working on some projects and ideas about seed. A little FYI if ya know what I mean. First of all when you think about it we eat seed all the time. The most important food ever- Chocolate comes from the seed pod of the Cacao tree. I will ask the children if they ever eat seed
I have already tested my theory on Abby and she totally fell for it. She said No then well yes then she said maybe?!! I laughed and then proceeded to tell her about all the seed she eats. Rice, Wheat, Corn, pickles, okra even mustard! I also have some cotton seeds I picked up on the side of the road while we were traveling. I can ask them if they wear any seed? I could not live without a seed that is so very important to me, coffee. I love me some coffee seed. Oh before I forget the oldest living seed to germinate is-
The most recent record (June 2005) is the seed of a date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) that was discovered during an archaeological excavation at King Herod's Palace on Mount Masada near the Dead Sea. Nicknamed "Methuselah" the palm that sprouted from this ancient seed has been Carbon-dated at about 2,000 years old. Since date palms are dioecious, it is not known whether the palm is male or female.

I ate an orange seed when I was a kid. I was so scared. I thought a tree would grow in my tummy and I would die. LOL
